Get to know our Senior Manager Kelsey, who has been working in our York office for almost 10 years. Read below to find out about her career at HGH and what she enjoys most.
What does your day-to-day role include?
As a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Advisor I’m involved in a wide variety of work at HGH. I run the corporate finance department, which involves businesses who are acquiring or selling, dealing with their funding requirements, business plans, cashflows and exit planning.
Another aspect of my role is being part of the tax department where I advise on mostly individuals and corporate tax issues.
I also look after a portfolio of accounts clients, which includes day to day management of their accounts.
Finally, part of my role as senior manager is helping the directors with the development of HGH as a business and making a difference to our clients.
What inspired you to do accountancy?
I have always enjoyed numbers and taken a great interest in business.
I always thought that the financials are the heart of any business, so if I can understand the financials, then I can help businesses to grow and succeed.
How did you start your career?
I always knew I wanted to be a Chartered Accountant. Though my college pushed for university, I applied for an apprenticeship at HGH to gain real-life experience. Since the chartered exams were required after a degree anyway, it was the best decision I ever made.
What is it like to work for HGH?
Working for HGH is very interesting as we’ve got a great range of clients, from small sole traders to larger audit companies. All in a variety of different sectors with different needs that we can advise on.
We’ve got a great team of people at HGH which allow us to fully support each client. This can vary from providing financial advice, tax advice, bookkeeping and payroll, preparing accounts, or even buying and selling a business. So, with the team and the experience of long-standing members we can provide a full 360 service to a client.
What benefits do you get at HGH?
We’re right in the centre of York which is perfect for shopping, eating, and drinking!
We have a flexible working policy and a great social element. We have regular social events and the fun committee do a great job of finding fun things to do.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy the variety; no two days are the same. Working with the variety of clients, I enjoy that we’re making a difference to clients and local businesses.
What advice would you give someone who wants to start their career in accountancy?
Just do it.
There are also some great apprenticeships out there now where you can get life experience alongside the exams.
What is your proudest moment in your career so far?
My proudest moment was when I passed my Chartered Tax exams after my Chartered Accountancy exams. These exams are a huge sacrifice to complete but definitely worth it as it’s allowed me to complete my role at HGH. As now having both qualifications has helped with the corporate finance work where I can advise on the full aspect of a transaction.
What do you enjoy doing when not in work?
I enjoy eating and drinking at our clients’ restaurants!
Where is the best place you have ever visited & why?
My favourite place to visit is Scotland because I am a keen whisky drinker and I love the outdoors. There is nothing better than going for a walk and then finishing with a whisky.
How would you sum up HGH in one word?
Supportive.
